Juddson Culpepper is an expert in the oil and gas industry, known for his work in managing land deals and helping companies stay on track with regulations. He graduated from Texas A&M University with degrees in Natural Resource Development and Recreation, and he’s made a name for himself by finding innovative ways to manage land. Juddson co-founded Forza Resources and Saline Creek Oil and Gas, where he leads teams and handles big projects. In this interview, Juddson opens up about his journey, the challenges he’s overcome, and shares advice for the future leaders of the energy world.

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in your field?

Ever since I can remember, I’ve had a deep love for the outdoors, which sparked my interest in managing natural resources. That passion guided me to study Recreation, Park, and Tourism Science, along with Natural Resource Development at Texas A&M. My career in land services really began when I worked as a Field Landman for Kastner Land Services. That experience opened my eyes to the ins and outs of title research and how to solve legal issues around land ownership. As I moved forward, I realized the oil and gas industry needed a mix of technical know-how, understanding regulations, and business skills — and I found myself excited by that challenge.

What was the pivotal “aha” moment that defined your leadership or business approach?

In 2010, when I founded Petra Land, we had a team of over 25 landmen, and I quickly saw how important it was to bring technology into our work. Using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) made it easier to track properties, analyze data, and handle due diligence. By adopting these tools, we were able to give our clients better and faster services, which really transformed how we operated. This experience shaped how I lead today—always looking for innovative ways to improve, even in an industry that tends to stick to old-school methods.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced, and how did you overcome them to achieve success?

Facing the ups and downs of the oil and gas market is tough, and 2014 was especially challenging. Many projects were put on hold, and funding became scarce, which forced us to rethink how we worked. We had to get creative with fewer resources, finding ways to still deliver value to our clients. It also reminded us just how important relationships are. By relying on our network and building new partnerships, we were able to push through that tough time together.

How has your leadership or innovation made a significant impact on your industry or community?

When we introduced GIS technology into land services, it completely transformed how we worked. With these systems, we could map land faster, keep better track of acquisitions, and give our clients more accurate information. This led to happier clients and raised the bar for land services across the industry. On a personal note, co-founding the East Texas chapter of Young Professionals in Energy was a rewarding way for me to give back by supporting future energy leaders. Mentoring and helping others connect through networking is something I truly care about.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs or leaders looking to make their mark in your industry?

To succeed in the oil and gas industry, it’s important to stay flexible and embrace new technology. While the industry can be slow to change, those who take the lead with innovations like GIS, data mining, or staying on top of regulations will stand out. Equally important is building strong relationships. Whether it’s with clients, partners, or your team, trust and collaboration will help you go far. And remember, tough times aren’t setbacks—they’re opportunities to learn and grow.

Can you highlight a specific project or initiative you’ve led that showcases your innovation and leadership?

Starting Saline Creek Oil and Gas in 2012 was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. We took on the huge task of negotiating over 1,600 leases, which pushed us to find new, more efficient ways to work. By using technology like GIS mapping and automated lease reviews, we simplified what could have been a long, complicated process. Leading this project showed me how important it is to guide a team through challenges and embrace innovation. I’m proud of what we accomplished, and the success of this project helped establish our reputation in the industry.
