With a background in public health, Marsha also mentors others, advocates for important causes, and helps her community. We talked with Marsha about her career, her challenges, and her hopes for the future of healthcare and renewable energy.

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in your field?

I’ve always loved helping people, so healthcare seemed like the right path for me. I began working in public health, focusing on community programs. But I soon realized I wanted to make a more direct impact. Home healthcare allowed me to connect with people on a personal level, providing care that meets their specific needs. Seeing how much personalized care improved lives made me realize this is where I belong.

What was the pivotal “aha” moment that defined your leadership or business approach?

The moment that truly shifted my perspective was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was working as part of the vaccination team at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, administering vaccines at the largest mass vaccination site in the country. It was during this time that I saw the true value of community-based healthcare, and how critical it is to meet people where they are. Seeing the relief and gratitude from patients as we helped protect them from this virus solidified my commitment to home healthcare. I realized that my leadership had to be about creating partnerships and bridging gaps in care, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable populations.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced, and how did you overcome them to achieve success?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is ensuring that my patients not only receive the care they need but also feel a sense of connection and engagement. Many of my clients have limited mobility, and isolation can take a toll on their mental and emotional health. To overcome this, I developed a holistic approach to care that includes mental stimulation through activities like storytelling, board games, and even community-based events when possible. Overcoming logistical challenges, especially during the pandemic, was tough, but by staying flexible and innovative, I was able to maintain a high standard of care while adhering to strict safety protocols.

How has your leadership or innovation made a significant impact on your industry or community?

I’ve always believed in working together and getting involved with the community. Over the years, I’ve partnered with elder care professionals and organizations to share helpful ideas and create better care plans. For example, during the pandemic, I led a team to deliver protective gear, like masks and hand sanitizers, to people in underserved areas. By providing these supplies, we improved healthcare access and strengthened relationships within the community.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs or leaders looking to make their mark in your industry?

My advice is to always show empathy and focus on personalized care. In healthcare, human connection is essential. To make a real difference, you need to understand each patient’s unique needs. Also, never stop learning from others. Healthcare is constantly changing, so staying informed, connecting with other professionals, and being involved in the community are important for staying ahead.

Can you highlight a specific project or initiative you’ve led that showcases your innovation and leadership?

Many underserved people struggled to get protective gear during the pandemic. I led a team and teamed up with local churches to hand out PPE like masks, face shields, and hand sanitizers. In total, we gave out more than 8,000 items. This project not only helped keep people safe, but it also reinforced my belief in the power of giving back. It showed me how even a small effort can make a big difference when done with care and purpose.
